Monaco Grand Prix 1948 Fine Art Giclee PrintEnlarge

Monaco Grand Prix 1948 Fine Art Giclee Print

The old castle battlements are the background for the 1948 race-the resumption of the Grand Prix after an 11-year hiatus. For reasons that are not altogether clear, Geo Ham signed his works Geo Matt-sort of an inversion of his already-shortened last name-during this period. This beautiful piece, part of an exclusive line of incredibly high quality commemorative edition Giclee prints, is printed on a thick, 100% acid free, imported heavy archival stock. The finest museum standard archival water-based organic inks and paints are used to produce a stunningly brilliant piece with a rich, non-glare matte finish. This is a rare Giclee, and is unusual in that it is not mass produced. Other limited edition prints are produced by the hundreds or even thousands, while this piece is printed only one at a time, individually made and hand numbered. 24 Heures du Mans - Lmtd. Ed. Hand Numbered Fine Art Giclee Print

First held in 1922, the 24-hour race at Le Mans was organized by the Automobile Club d'Ouest, with the help of auto-racing journalist Charles Faroux who wrote the rules. It became a huge success, as the spectators indulged in round-the-clock partying with music, dancing and drinking. For the drivers, it was a grueling test of stamina, yet all felt they hadn't earned their spurs until they had tried it. George Ham, also know as Geo Ham (as he signed his art work) contributed much of the vintage automobile and racing artwork throughout the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. The French poster artist is to be thanked for the stunning images advertising for the Grand Prix at Monaco in 1933, 1948 and 1957. Many of his images are of bright blue and red Ferrari race cars speeding down the track. The advertising art posters for the Monaco Grand Prix of 1948, the Grand Prix de Pau in the 1930's and the 41st Grand Prix ACF race at Reims, France all feature Ferrari race cars as rendered by Ham. Also very interesting are the posters for the 24 Heures du Mans and the 12 Heurs de Paris. The poster art for the 12 Heures de Paris in 1937 (with a blue sports car in front of a huge sunny yellow clock) is of particular interest to collectors as the race never took place due to World War II. The race had to be cancelled but the art work is a wonderful example of Geo Ham's eye catching work. An earlier poster by Ham is for the Amalicar Grand Sport race. Even if you aren't a huge automobile racing fan, these vintage art prints are wonderfully colorful pieces of decorative art (check out the Grand Prix de Nimes of 1933 for bold Art Deco style) and interesting pieces of history.
