At the seashore, a tot is dandled by his father to advertise East Anglia as a resort destination for the London and North Eastern railway. The bright, unoutlined colors in this poster are typical of Purvis; he was, in fact, probably the graphically strongest posterist of the many fine ones the British railways employed. London Underground / The Film-Lover Giclee Print

Pears was another Underground stalwart, creating 44 posters for the service between 1913 and 1936. This design is from a series that reinforces loyalty by identifying different consumer types, much like Shell's. These people use and campaigns. Here, Pears uses his illustrator's skills in a humerous vein to demonstrate that the Underground makes movie houses so accessible that anyone can walk in at any time. Good for latecomers, not so good for the seated patrons who have to stretch and crane to see the overripe love scene on the screen. Below the image an unusual notation - "Drawn on five lithographic stones by Chas. Pears., R.O.I." - indicates that the talented Pears did the lithography himself. England became a playground for those fascinated travelers who enjoyed the sea, golf courses, the royal capital, enchanting castles, and festivals or to attend colleges such as the famed Cambridge University. London?s Express Stream Locomotives (LNER) offered trips to Mablethorne & Sutton, Bridlington, Scarborough, Norfolk, Southport, St. Andrews and Saltburn-by-the-Sea, among others. Visitors could also obtain the LMS Railway by way of Piccadilly Square to visit London, which was quicker by rail. During the early 1900?s through mid-century England, the city of London was a metropolis for businessmen and vacationers, from the film-lover; to the glamour of nightlife; to the cruises and art lovers.
