Claude Monet – The French Impressionist Art King In the interesting biography of Claude Monet, he was undisputedly the most famous Impressionist Painter of all time – the founder, in fact – a title he still holds to this day. Born in 1840, Monet lived a long life to the age of 86, accomplishing more than 2,000 known paintings during his life span. Since his death in 1926, many more paintings, sketches and drawings have been discovered in the archives of Monet’s famed home in Giverny, with a fondness for the outdoors and nature prevalent in most of Claude Monet’s paintings. Born in Paris as the son of a business man, Claude Monet’s family moved to a town on the coast of Normandy when he was only five. Although Claude’s father had hoped he would one day take over the family grocery store, he was always an artist at heart, drawing charcoal caricatures as a teen. When he was only 11, Monet met and became the student of renowned Le Havre Secondary School of the Arts, but it was the legendary landscape artist Eugéne Boudin who encouraged Monet to paint oil outdoor paintings on canvas. The earliest of Monet’s paintings dates back to 1858; as still a young apprentice and art student at 18 years old.
